Are there any free NBME exams?

To help students continue to sharpen their knowledge during testing delays that may result from COVID-19, seven complimentary NBME Self-Assessments are available. Free Self-Assessments include the following exams: Comprehensive Basic Science (CBSSA) Forms 13, 15, 16, 17, and 19.

How can I take NBME exam?

Self-Assessments are delivered through the MyNBMESM Examinee Portal. You must log in to MyNBME to access a self-assessment and complete it within 90 days. You may sign off and resume/continue your self-assessment at any time during the 90 day period. The Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessment is available for $60.

How do I get NBME vouchers?

Self-assessment vouchers are ordered through an online NBME Store. The store will allow you to shop for a variety of NBME services. Users will not be able to place an order if they do not have access to a store billing account. UAAs can create institution store billing accounts and assign local users access to them.

Once you have completed the entire self-assessment, you can review all the items and the correct answers in the performance feedback in the exam review section. However, you cannot go back and change answers once you have completed the exam.

It’s important to note that the NBME Free 120 does not give a three-digit score, but it generates a percentage of what you got right. There is no clear data on how your NBME score will correlate to your USMLE score.

UWorld is unquestionably the best resource for the USMLE. Students have been known to score 270+ on USMLE Step 1 just by using UWorld and First Aid. There are also students, however, who have gone through the question bank 3 or more times, and can’t seem to get a passing score on the exam.

The NBME practice exams will accurately estimate your three-digit Step 1 score (with a +/- 10 point margin of error). UWorld question blocks won’t. (Not to mention, the UWorld self assessment exams actually inflate your predicted USMLE score by 20 points!)

How many times can you take an NBME?

Yes. You can retake the USMLE Step 1 exam up to six times. You can only take the exam a maximum of three times within a 12-month period. Your fourth and subsequent attempts at the exam must be at least 12 months after your first attempt, and at least six months after your most recent attempt.

Does NBME give you explanations?

Yes, the Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessments released on March 24, 2021 (forms 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30) will include answer explanations for both correct and incorrect answer choices.
